Vingt-neuf ans après l’accident de Three Mile Island, la construction de réacteurs nucléaires est relancée outre-Atlantique. La centrale de Vogtle (photo ci-dessous) située en Géorgie, près de la ville d’Augusta (environ 190 000 habitants) et la bourgade de Waynesboro (moins de 6 000 habitants), déjà dotée de deux réacteurs, en accueillera deux autres en 2016 et 2017. Le contrat a été signé mardi 8 avril par, d’un côté, les actionnaires de cette centrale (Georgia Power – à hauteur de 45.7% -, Oglethorpe Power Corporation – 30% -, Municipal Electric Authority of Georgia – 22.7% – et la ville de Dalton – 1.6%) et, de l’autre, le constructeur Westinghouse Electric, une filiale du groupe japonais Toshiba. Westinghouse-Toshiba spécialiste des technologies à eau pressurisée (REP), a fourni la moitié des réacteurs nucléaires actuellement en service dans le monde.
